What is now the Province of the Americas was initially the Order of St Francis, founded by Fr Joseph OSF in 1919. This consisted of 1st Order Franciscan friars, 2nd Order Poor Clare sisters, and 3rd Order Tertiaries. In 1967 it joined SSF, becoming established as the American Province.
The province was renamed in 2004 as the Province of the Americas, recognising membership for a period of 1st Order brothers in Brazil and continuing membership of 3rd Order members in many parts of Latin America.
